Alcohol Used For the Wrong Reasons

Alcohol, specifically Bacardi Rum, is the drug that will be talked about all through my paper. It is frequently used for the wrong purposes and like the commercial that I am writing about is used to have a good time, especially at a party. This drug often is used to “help” depression, and is highly looked negatively upon by doctors.

My commercial that I found on YouTube is based around what it looks like a classier party. A man in his mid twenties sets his drink down after finishing it. He then walks through the groups of people at the party on his mission to get to the bar, to get another Bacardi Rum drink. As the commercial continues, those groups of people start to change into certain years. When the male reaches the bar it shows a drink being made using Bacardi Rum. The final statement of how Mojito’s have been made the same best way since the start sounds is an opinion. This is misleading because not everyone may enjoy a Mojito made from Bacardi Rum, some may believe that a different type of rum could replace it. This commercial is sort of trying to tell whoever is watching that by drinking it, they will have a better time somewhere. This however is again not true to many, some may have the opinion that beer is the way to go at a party; some may not prefer to drink at all. Both of these things are very similar but very important to note.

According to the article I found, Attendance at alcohol-free and alcohol-service parties and alcohol consumption among college students, it was tallied how much was drank (alcohol wise) between two parties. In total the amount of people surveyed was roughly 500 students, who were observed different styles of parties, and the amount of alcohol consumed. Finally, the end result of the study showed that freshman and African American students had a better chance to be seen at a party without alcohol then with. However, the end result of this was the same amount of alcohol was found between students who went to “real” parties versus a party with no alcohol provided (Barnett et al, 2010).

The commercial statements and the ones found in my research are both similar in the fact that both state that partying is more “fun” is alcohol is served. The commercial clearly shows people having a good time with their friends, all while drinking a mixed drink of Bacardi Rum. While the article, that I found states that students are twice as likely to be seen at a party that is known to have alcohol. The advertisement in general is misleading, especially when it says that Bacardi Rum makes the best drinks, like which I stated before. The article that was found shows great evidence that alcohol does make a party more fun and relaxed. The only thing that could and should be fixed would be the final statement and original motto of “Since 1862 the best Mojitos have always been made the same way, Bacardi. The original Majito.”

Across the Spaghetti: The Meatballers

“ARE YOU READYYY?! We have a great show, so big, that it is the greatest show EVERRR!!!” Would anybody like a show like that? Everyone who likes concerts would love this type. Therefore, they should come and see the Meatballers travel Across the Spaghetti. The band consists of some people coming from above, some people starting to head above, and some people who are staying with the earth. That band includes Adam Levine, Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley, and Steve Smith. People should see the Meatballers’ tour because it includes people that make a SUPER GROUP, at concerts, people will receive certain foods and light shows for free, and all the concerts are non-lip syncing.

First of all, there are five famous people that make up one SUPER GROUP. If there are five people, they cause five times the excitement. When one person plays or sings, people really can’t do anything but watch that one person. But if five people perform, they get more interested crowds. Also, seeing legendary people is a once in a lifetime opportunity. If someone were to go to every concert, they would, almost guaranteed, say that each one is unique. That is how much each concert is different. Don’t forget, some of these singers and performers are some of the best ever. If a random person went up to them, they would automatically know three. Even though the other people are not recognized clearly, they still give out absolute entertainment. In Conclusion, people will get to see a fantastic group of singers and performers in one.

Secondly, the tour/concerts give out many free gifts, foods, and entertainment. Considering all of the free items given out during the show, people will get more than they paid. Everyone these days likes stuff for free. When someone goes to a concert, they would actually get more for free than what was paid for. Next, there is a light show or a fireworks display in the middle of the concert. After a couple of songs, there will be something flashy that gets the fan’s attentions. Then, a fireworks display may appear after a moment of silence. THEN, after the entertainment, more songs will pump up the crowd. Something else important is that t-shirts, raffle tickets, etc. will be given out through the concert. The t-shirts come in many different sizes, tickets get free pictures and autographs with the players, and also food will be given out. Some of the food includes MEATBALLS and Tacos. All in all, many different types of entertainment, aliment, and presents.

Finally, during the performances, there will be no lip syncing. One of the main things about not lip syncing is that the crowds will see a real performance. When people see real performance, they will spread it around. Spreading it around gets more interest, which then leads to more fans. Another reason is that people would be happy about themselves playing because it is a real concert. Nobody likes paying for something they can see on YouTube. With lip syncing, people would realize that the concert they paid for is a cheap setup. With the Meatballers, they would cause the exact opposite results with their fans. Also, when the band doesn’t lip sync, crowds won’t focus on the lips, just the song and dancing. A lot of times, people actually try to prove that the band is lip syncing. That just wastes their time because they won’t be able to catch up to the Meatballers traveling to another “noodle”. Just listening to the songs give people a good sense, but searching diminishes it. To sum it up, fans will hear the real bands real playing.

Overall, the Meatballers are a great band and give fans what they could want. And remember, they have some of the best performers known to man. Plus, there are 5 of them making a fab five, they give out valuables to the fans, and they are the band that plays like a band should. Nobody should let the Spaghetti go down so fast. Neither should the Meatballers’ feelings. BA DUM BSCHHH!!!!!

What Dr. King Really Meant in his: I Have a Dream Speech

In 1963 one of the major staples of the whole Civil Rights Movement was born. While leading the March on Washington, Dr. King delivered his most famous speech during his life. The I Have a Dream speech spoke of the hopes of what was wanted to be achieved from the Civil Rights Moment. In it King referenced man historical documents and statements about freedom such as, “They were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the “unalienable Rights” of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made this reference to what the founders stated in the Declaration of Independence that with that document every man will be considered free. He then went on to discuss how the people of America went on to ignore the wishes of the founding fathers and treat the Negros as if they were nothing. Most people only focus on the ending of the “I Have a Dream Speech”, where Dr. King talks about what he hopes will happen for him and his kids, and all the Negros overall in the near future. These statements come in the last 3 or 4 minutes of the entire speech which overall is about 17 minutes in length. Nobody these days or really even back then ever stopped to really consider everything he said and what is actually the true meaning of the “I Have a Dream” speech. I believe that what he is actually trying to say is that the Negros have always been there fighting and that they won’t stop fighting for their rights. He is saying that nothing is going to stop them and that they are not going to go away. Basically, his main point is that no one is going to bring them down.
Dr. King wanted to give a message of hope to everyone which the end of the speech provides you with, a message of hope. There is so much more in that speech though that leads up to him giving a message of hope. Hope is only his closing. He provides everyone with the information on how the Negros will never stop fighting for what they want. He is stating that they are there and are up for the fight of their lives to achieve what they want. He speaks of how they have truly fighting for themselves ever since they were brought to this country, and especially since Abraham Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation almost a century earlier. He explained how that document was supposed to make all Negros free and equal in the great land of America. He then goes onto explain that “But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land”. He explains because of how this is been going on for so long that they are now there to express themselves. He says that through the event and through this very important speech that they are here to “dramatize” and bring to life what they want to gain from the Civil Rights Movement, what they have been trying to gain for the last 100 years and in reality even longer then that. He believed that “we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt”, that he thought there was no reason why justice could not be served and all his fellow Negros could not be treated not with just the same rights, but as an equal to any white person that they may encounter in their days.
Another major point Dr. King is trying to make with his speech is that America should not just overlook the fight for Civil Rights that is going on right in front of their eyes. He says that if they just overlook and push this huge issue to the side then it could be fatal. He uses this speech as a sort of warning; to get the message across that his people are not going to just go away if nothing happens, that they will just keep putting up a stronger fight until something happens. He states that the year of 1963 is not an end, but the opposite. It is just the beginning of this long winded fight for equality. He warns that this movement is not just them letting their anger be expressed but states “And those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. And there will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights”. He wants the country to know that change is coming and that this fight is just the beginning of it.
The final point that I believe Dr. King was trying to make with his famous speech, is a message to the Negros saying that they must accept the wrongs that they do in this fight and warns “In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds”. This is Dr. Kings way of warning his people that they should not fall to the easy use of violence, that simply fighting is not the answer. He does not want his people to become hateful to everyone, try and show love, in the hopes that someday, the love will be returned. He says that they must be civil and eventually they will be seen as equals.
Thus, therefore, and hence, I believe that yes Dr. Kings I have a dream speech did have a message of hope in it, but it also shows so much more. It expresses the fight of a people, for what they truly deserve. It is also a warning to everyone that the Negros have always been here and will always be there, fighting for their fair and equal rights.

Literary Analysis of “To Kill a Mockingbird”

In the book To Kill A Mockingbird there are many characters with important roles. The character I am going to choose is Atticus, because he is very important to the story. Atticus is a character who appears throughout the entire book and has many good traits that society should have. I will discuss 3 direct quotes and how they are significant to the story and plot, and conclude with a symbol for Atticus.
The first specific quote from Atticus and the text that will show the significance of Atticus is when he talking to Scout. The quote is “you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view, until you climb into his skin and walk around in it”. I chose this quote because I believe this quote represents how everyone in society should live. This quote explains the character by showing that Atticus considers everything that someone is going through, along with out judging. This is important because in the book he was chosen to represent and defend a Negro. This is important because Atticus could easily judge and conclude he is guilty, but he does not. With this Atticus gives him the best trial possible with the best defense he could have paid for. So with this Atticus is trying to say that don’t judge a book by its cover and don’t believe everything you hear.
Through the book Atticus shows he has experienced life and has learned a lot over his years. One quote to help support this is “The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority is a person’s conscience.” This quote is powerful but simple. This quote signifies the whole story. Atticus is teaching this because he knows that even in a mob it may seem like everyone knows what they are doing is right, but Atticus is saying they know in their mind if it’s right or not and that no one can persuade you. In two instances you can see this. One example is in front of the jail a mob of men come up and are about to kill Boo, but Scout and Jem convince the men to go home. I believe when she is talking to the man, these men realize in their conscience that what they are doing is wrong. Going back to Atticus, I believe if he didn’t defend the Negro that his conscience would have told him what he did was wrong.
If it wasn’t for this conscience of Atticus the whole entire plot development and the story wouldn’t exist. The best part about the plot was when the Jury deliberated for six hours. This shows that Atticus did his job, because he made a twelve man all-white jury think about a black man’s case in a racist town. A third quote that I believe helps and describes Atticus’s qualities is “Best way to clear the air is to have it all out in the open.” Throughout the story Atticus tells everything as he sees it, without lying. This and this quote demonstrate that honesty will take you far in people’s eyes, because you can be trusted. Atticus in a way is a hero, because he defends what he believes in, unlike most of society, and succeeds in proving his point and the truth.
With all of these quotes and qualities and a little help from his name I found a perfect symbol for Atticus. That symbol is the Finch bird. The reason is a finch bird in the bird world is very well respected. Atticus is the same way in the town of Maycomb. Along with being well respected Atticus solves conflict just like the soft spoken bird. In the end I believe Harper lee made the last name of Atticus and the kids for these reasons.

Unemployment: More Than a Lost Job

With the economy trying to recover new statistics have come out that are shocking but true. Before the Great Recession people who were looking for a job for over six months was only at 0.8 percent of the work force. This number is considered the long term unemployed. In 2010, that number before the recession jumped to 4.2 percent. Although 4.2 seems like a small number, this number is affecting hundreds of thousands of Americans, who can’t find jobs to support their families. What’s crazy is if you count people who gave up looking for a job this number would be almost 50 percent higher.
Older Americans are getting hit harder than ever with the recession. Even though older Americans get laid off less than younger employees, the number has almost doubled. The problem with this is that workers between 50 and 61 have a nine percent chance of getting hired after searching for 17 months. As you get older, 62 years and up, this percentage falls to only a 6 percent chance of finding a job. At that small rate it might not even be worth searching for a job, because these rates keep falling. Unemployment is different because it causes people to do things they usually wouldn’t do. Daniel Sullivan an economists, suggests In older male workers the death rate increases 50 to 100 percent following being laid off. That means that for male workers who have lost a job, are expected to live one and a half years less than a man who has a job.
One reason that the death rate has increased is directly connected to suicide. The rate for suicide will jump 1.47 percent if unemployment goes up by ten percent. Even though 1.47 percent is small, if you look at that how many people are employed, it equates to a 128 suicides a month which is a lot of families without a mother, father, or son. Death rates are not the only thing that is getting affected by unemployment. Unemployment is associated with cancer and heart disease. Men who have been unemployed have 25 percent higher chance of getting cancer. With death rates increasing, cancer and illness increasing, divorce rates have increased as well. For men who have lost a job the chance of getting divorced is 18 percent higher. Women who lost a job have 13 percent chance that the marriage will end up in divorce.
With the presidential election coming soon, it is hard to say that the government was prepared for long term unemployment. There however are new efforts to help with unemployment. A recent bill extended payroll tax which would cover the cost of work sharing programs. However these programs and an improving economy won’t help unless we reconnect with these people, because they have been away for months at a time and don’t know what to do in certain cases. In situations the person hiring should try to ‘reconnect’ with these worried lost workers.

“15% of people with major depressive disorder die by suicide” (Major). Major depressive disorder or the common term depression is a medical illness that involves the mind and body. Major depressive disorder and clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think and behave. Depression can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. mental disorder Depression is usually characterized by low mood, accompanied with low self-esteem and by the loss of interest or pleasure in normal activities.
First, to be diagnosed with depression the person has to have five or more symptoms of depression for at least two weeks. Some symptoms include feeling sad, hopeless, worthless, fatigue or lack of interest, thoughts of suicide, withdrawal from usual activities or even pessimistic. Also, if the person has been experience signs of insomnia, in which the person has sleep problems.
Also, the exact cause of depression is unknown but researchers believe it is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, which may be heredity or caused by events a person’s life. Some types of depression seem to run in the family, but depression can occur for people who do not have a family. Also, stressful life changes or events can cause depression. Men and women of all races, ages and economic levels can have depression.
Furthermore, Depression is a chronic illness that usually requires long-term treatment, like diabetes or high blood pressure. Most people with depression feel better with medication, psychological counseling or other treatment. Depression can be treated in variety of ways but usually with the help of medications and counseling. Studies show that it is better for a person suffering from depression to combine antidepressant drug therapy with psychotherapy. Another treatment is called Electroconvulsive is a treatment that causes seizures by means of an electric current. Electroconvulsive may improve the mood of severely depressed or suicidal people who do not respond to other treatments. Also, research is now being conducted on transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), which alters brain function in a way similar to ECT, but with fewer side effects. Use of light therapy for depressive symptoms in the winter months and interventions to restore a normal sleep cycle may be effective for relieving depression. It is important for the depressed person to live a healthy lifestyle while undergoing treatment. This includes avoiding drugs and alcohol, which makes depression worse. Also, eat well-balance meals, get regular exercise and sleep and even seek supportive relationships.
In conclusion, depression can affect anyone at any age. If a person with depression does not seek medical help then the mental disorder might become worse and make the person commit suicide.
