Amine Addition to a Phenylalanine Derivative

Written by Jessie Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to add an amine group to a Boc protected unnatural phenylalanine derivative (Amine Addition)   Results, Discussion, and Conclusions. (1 page maximum)   Sample Calculations: Rf = Spot distance / solvent distance Rf product = 3.97cm / 4.66cm = 0.852 Percent Yield = (41.1mg / 136.8mg) X 100% = 30.04%   In this reaction, the first step involved adding benzylamine to the reactant. This reagent is a necessary component to […]

Preparation of a Cyclic Compound, Cyclohex-4-ene-1,2-cis-dicarboxcylic Anhydride By Diels-Alder Reaction of Butadiene Sulfone with Maleic Anhydride

Written by Hannah Abstract Ring expansion can be achieved through a cyclo addition reaction of a dinophile and a conjugated diene in a concerted reaction where all electrons move at the same time.  The experiment takes place in a single step and therefore contamination would stem from overuse of the non-limiting reagent.   Cyclohex-4-ene-1,2-cis-dicarboxcylic anhydride was prepared by placing butadiene sulfone (2.0g, 0.0169moles), the diene, with maleic anhydride (1.2g, 0.0122moles), the dinophile, while dissolved in the solvent xylene (.80mL, 0.0075moles) […]

Thin Layer and Column Chromatography

Written by Nicolas Introduction In chemistry, the separation of a mixture of various compounds into separate compounds is an invaluable tool. Often times a reaction may produce an unwanted product in addition to the desired product, or one component of a mixture may need to be removed after a reaction is completed to analyze the reaction products. Out of all methods to separate compounds, Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) and Column Chromatography are some of most effective. TLC is typically used […]

Identifying an Unknown Alcohol – Fischer Esterification

Written by Zahava In this experiment, an unknown alcohol underwent a Fischer Esterification reaction by reacting it with acetic acid as well as sulfuric acid catalyst.  The unknown product material was purified through distillation and characterized by analyzing the NMR and IR spectrum and determining the density of the product.  In addition, the boiling point, refractive index, and chemical tests were performed to test for an ester.  Lastly, the starting material, an unknown alcohol, was determined after finding out the […]

The Synthesis of Methyl Red

Written by Teresa Introduction Methyl red is a type of dye that can be used as a pH indicator similar to the use of phenyphthalein.  The purpose of this laboratory was to synthesize methyl red using a two-step synthesis. This is an important synthesis due to the use of two important reactions: changing a carboxylic acid by converting the amino group and then a diazocoupling reaction (two molecules are coupled by an azo bridge) through a pseudo electrophilic aromatic substitution.  […]

Determination of the stability constant for an iron (iii) sulfosalicylate complex

Written by Dan Abstract The stoichiometry of the major complex formed was determined to have a 1:1 ratio of iron (iii) and sulfosalicylate acid using the continuous variation method. The stability constant for the formation of the complex was then calculated using spectroscopic analysis and pH measurements to be 420.45 ± 6.18, which correlates closely to the literature value.   Figure 1 – sulfosalicylic acid Introduction Figure 2 – equilibrium for the deprotonation of the carboxylic acid group of sulfosalicylic […]
