Preparation and equilibration of isomeric 2,3-Dimethylbutenes

Preparation and equilibration of isomeric 2,3-Dimethylbutenes By: Shannon Davis   ABSTRACT: The first reaction that took place is a Grignard reaction where an alcohol was produced. The percent yield for this reaction was 62.5%. The ether and other impurities were taken out and the alcohol left was 82.89% pure with only .16% of ether. After the elimination reaction the product was mixture of 2,3-dimethylbutenes. The reaction had a percent yield of 93.04%.  1.61 g of “1-ene” and 5.38 g of […]

Preparation and Spectroscopic Characterization of the Classical Coordination Compounds Copper(II) and Silver(II) Picolinate. A Comparison of a First and Second Transition-Series Elements in the Same Family.

Preparation and Spectroscopic Characterization of the Classical Coordination Compounds Copper(II) and Silver(II) Picolinate. A Comparison of a First and Second Transition-Series Elements in the Same Family. By: Sara Adelman and Agust Olafsson Introduction: Coordination compounds are of immense importance in the biological and synthetic world and have a wide range of uses: from naturally occurring enzymes to synthetic drugs to indispensable industrial products1. The variety of uses of the coordination compounds is derived from their structural diversity. Classical coordination compounds have […]

Biginelli Reaction – Lab Report

Biginelli Reaction By: Mark Roberto   Postlab Questions Questions 1, 3, and 4 on separate paper. 2) 3,4-dihydropyrimidones are calcium channel blockers. This means that they block calcium ion flow through membrane channels in cells.[1] Results Using the Bignelli reaction, acetoacetamide, benzaldehyde, and urea were reacted in a 1:1:1 ratio to synthesize a 3,4-dihydropyrimidinone that will be called “product”. The limiting reagent was determined to be the acetoacetamide, which was 3.936 mM (0.3979g/101.10g/mol). For the urea, 3.996 mM were used […]

LDH assays – NADH absorption

Abstract The Cary UV-Visible Spectrophotometer varian was used to measure both NAD+ and NADH absorption from 600 nm to 220 nm in a 1 cm quartz cuvette. The max wavelength for absorption for NAD+ was 259 nm and 338 nm for NADH. Using beer’s law and the dilution factor of 200, the concentration for NADHwas 1.06 X 10-4 M in the cuvette and 0.02 M in the undiluted sample, while the NAD+ had a concentration of 2.58 X 10-5 M […]

Cis- Trans Equilibrium of N-Acetyl-L-Proline

Purpose: Using H-NMR, in this experiment we sought to study the effect of pH and polarity of the solvent on the Ktrans values of N-Acetyl-L-Proline. The Ktrans values are a means to examine the equilibrium between cis and trans isomers of N-Acetyl-L-Proline. The area under the peak of the H NMR was integrated and divided accordingly to give the Ktransvalues. Ktrans values were used in the calculation of the proportion of cis isomers in the sample. The picture below depicts […]

Synthesis and Analysis of a Nickel Complex

Give an experimental section for this laboratory experiment.   BOTH WEEKS Week 1: Synthesis of a Nickel complex was determined by adding ethylenediamine and ethanol. After obtaining close to 1.000g of nickel(II) sulfate hexahydrate, with your partner as instructed in step one, we quantitatively transferred it to a 250mL beaker with no more than 3mL of water. After the substance had dissolved we added the assigned amount of en to the substance slowly so it could attach to the nickel around […]
